Background of the Study
Dementia is a growing health concern globally, with significant implications for elderly care. In Nigeria, the prevalence of dementia is rising, particularly as the population ages. Dementia patients require specialized care to address cognitive decline, behavioral issues, and the physical challenges associated with the disease. In Borno State, healthcare facilities are faced with the dual challenge of managing dementia in a resource-constrained setting while also addressing the stigma associated with mental health disorders. Nurses play a central role in managing dementia patients, providing direct care, facilitating communication, and assisting with activities of daily living (Adewumi et al., 2023).
Research indicates that nurses’ knowledge and skills in dementia care are critical to providing effective management and improving the quality of life for patients. However, in many low-resource settings like Borno State, there are gaps in nurses’ knowledge regarding the management of dementia, which can lead to suboptimal care and increased distress for patients (Zubairu & Gana, 2024). This study will assess the level of knowledge and practice among nurses in Borno State hospitals, exploring how they manage dementia patients and identifying areas for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
In Borno State hospitals, nurses are often required to manage dementia patients without sufficient training or resources. As a result, care practices may be inconsistent, leading to suboptimal outcomes for patients. There is limited research on nurses’ knowledge and practice in managing dementia in Borno State, highlighting the need for a comprehensive assessment of existing practices and the identification of training needs.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of knowledge among nurses in Borno State hospitals regarding dementia management.
To evaluate the practices employed by nurses in managing dementia patients.
To identify gaps in training and knowledge that may affect the quality of care provided to dementia patients in Borno State hospitals.
Research Questions
What is the level of knowledge among nurses in Borno State hospitals regarding dementia management?
What practices do nurses in Borno State hospitals use in managing dementia patients?
What are the gaps in training and knowledge that affect dementia care in Borno State hospitals?
Research Hypotheses
Nurses in Borno State hospitals have limited knowledge regarding dementia care and management.
Nurses’ knowledge of dementia care positively influences their practice and patient outcomes.
Gaps in training significantly hinder the quality of care provided to dementia patients in Borno State hospitals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses in Borno State hospitals and their practices in managing dementia patients. Limitations may include variability in the type of training nurses receive and the availability of resources to manage dementia effectively.
